A Message from the President

Spring has arrived, a sure sign of new beginnings, continued growth and professional development. SFMI kicked off the new season with our first-ever Critical Issues One-Day Training Summit in Chancellors Hall at the State Education Building in Albany. We welcomed nearly 200 school facilities directors, business officials and superintendents and other key facilities personnel. For me, the highlight at this event was when I had the opportunity to recognize and thank the Commissioner of the New York State Education Department, Richard P. Mills. As a thank you for all of his work with our Association and SFMI, and support of school facilities throughout the state, we presented Commissioner Mills with a plaque. For a complete wrap-up, read the article below and be sure to check out the photo gallery at www.sbga.org.

I’m excited to share with you all that our 2009 Conference Registration materials are now available on the website and will hit mailboxes shortly. As you know, our theme this year is Doing More with Less: Creative Solutions for School Facilities Managers, and we are committed to providing education and training sessions that will achieve just that. I look forward to seeing you all at this year’s conference, and celebrating all of our collective accomplishments.

SFMI Critical Issues Summit A Huge Success!

On March 26, SFMI in partnership with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) held its first Critical Issues One-Day Training Summit in historic Chancellors Hall located in the NYS Education Building, Albany, NY.

Nearly 200 school facilities directors, school business officials, superintendents and architects and engineers gathered to hear Commissioner Richard P. Mills address the importance of professional development and how necessary it is to continue attendance to programs such as the SFMI Summit to stay current in all areas that affect the successful daily management of school facilities. Joe Hammond, CDF, SBGA President (Liverpool CSD) was honored to present a plaque and sentiments shared by all in attendance, thanking Commissioner Mills for his steadfast support of the school facilities profession and recognition of his dedication and leadership in the education of the children of our State and his support of the school facilities where they learn.

Jackson Announces EPA Schools Monitoring Initiative
Administrator Jackson: 'Our job is to protect the American public where they live, work and play - and that certainly includes protecting schoolchildren where they learn.'

Lisa Jackson, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, announced today a new initiative to further measure levels of toxic air pollution near many schools across the country for better protection. EPA and its state partners will prioritize and monitor schools for more extensive air quality analysis, looking closely at schools located near large industries and in urban areas.
